Over the past few weeks, my partner Rem, our two pups, and I have been on an incredible journey across the United States, living out of our van and experiencing the beauty and challenges of life on the road. With just one week left before we settle into a more stable routine, I wanted to reflect on the unique experiences we’ve had, especially when it comes to running in a variety of conditions.
1. The Heat and Humidity: A Test of Endurance
Running in hot and humid climates was one of the most challenging parts of this journey. The air was thick, making it hard to breathe, and my heart rate would skyrocket within minutes of starting. It wasn’t just the physical challenge—it was a mental one, too. Every run felt like a battle against the elements, and staying hydrated was essential to avoid overheating. Despite the discomfort, these runs taught me resilience and the importance of adapting to whatever conditions you face.
2. Battling Bugs: The Unseen Opponents
Running in buggy climates was a whole different kind of challenge. In some areas, we were absolutely swarmed by deer flies and mosquitoes. Imagine trying to maintain a steady pace while constantly swatting at bugs—let’s just say it wasn’t easy! But looking back, these runs were also some of the most memorable. They forced me to laugh at the absurdity of it all and embrace the unpredictability of nature.
3. Cool and Dry: Running Bliss
When we finally reached cooler, drier climates, it felt like heaven. My breathing was easy, my legs felt strong, and I could run for miles without feeling drained. These were the moments that reminded me why I love running so much. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of cruising along a trail with the wind at your back and the cool air in your lungs. These runs were a welcome break from the heat and humidity, and they recharged my spirit.
4. High Altitude: A Struggle to Adapt
Our journey also took us to high-altitude areas, which brought a whole new set of challenges. The thin air made every step feel like a Herculean effort, and I struggled with dizziness, shortness of breath, and nausea. Despite the discomfort, I knew the importance of taking it slow and allowing my body to acclimate. I increased my carb intake slightly and focused on staying hydrated, which helped me adjust gradually. The crisp, dry air and warm sun were amazing, but the physical toll was undeniable. Yet, each day, I felt myself getting a little stronger and a little more accustomed to the altitude.
5. Reflecting on the Journey: Lessons Learned
As we near the end of our van life adventure, I’ve had time to reflect on how much I’ve learned from running in such diverse conditions. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how to adapt and thrive in any environment, which will undoubtedly make me a better coach for my athletes. I’ve learned that the key to successful training, whether on the road or at home, is flexibility and a willingness to embrace whatever comes your way.
Living in the van has been a mix of stress and joy. There were days when the lack of a stable routine was overwhelming, especially when it came to finding internet for work or dealing with the heat and bugs. But there were also moments of pure freedom—waking up in new places, exploring different landscapes, and having the time to simply be. It’s been an adventure I wouldn’t trade for anything, but I’m also looking forward to the comfort of a stable routine, a home base, and, of course, predictable internet!
Final Thoughts
This journey has been an incredible experience, and I’m grateful for every run, every challenge, and every lesson learned along the way. As we prepare to transition back to a more “normal” life, I know I’ll carry these memories with me and apply what I’ve learned to my training and coaching. Life is good, and the miles keep adding up. Here’s to the adventures still to come!
Thank you for following along on this journey. I hope my experiences inspire you to embrace whatever challenges come your way and find joy in the journey, no matter where it takes you.
Stay strong, keep running, and never stop exploring. 🏃♀️🚐✨
