How to become a mountain runner!

Do you want to start running up mountains like a pro but don’t know how to begin?

Becoming an awesome mountain runner takes dedication, a passion for the sport, and a willingness to push yourself beyond your limits. Here are some tips to help you become a seasoned mountain runner:

1. Train Consistently: Train your body for the unique challenges of mountain running by incorporating elevation gain, technical terrain, and long-distance runs into your training program. Most of your efforts should be easy and may involve fast hiking, do not be ashamed of going slow!  With properly placed hill workouts you will recover quickly and be able to cruise up and down the mountains like a gazelle!

2. Perfect Your Technique: Improve your running technique with proper form, efficient breathing, and safe downhill running techniques are key to perfecting your mountain running skills and fitness.  Practice transitioning from power hiking, jogging and running to find the most efficient pattern to get up the mountains.  You should focus on a consistent effort at a sustainable pace to allow for plenty of energy to rip the downhills!

3. Nutrition: Fuel your body with a balanced and nutrient-rich diet before, during, and after your runs to support your metabolism and muscle recovery.  For short runs gels and candy work but for longer runs you will want real food and electrolytes to keep you going all day!

4. Strengthen Your Body: Build strength with exercises that target your legs, core, and upper body.  Don’t forget your upper body as you will need it for balance and climbing/descending steep rocky scrambles!

5. Find a Community: Join local trail running clubs or groups an connect with other mountain runners for support, advice, and motivation.  Find a coach that specializes in mountain running to help take you to the next level.  Take advantage of clinics and training runs in your area and if nothing exists don’t be afraid to start your own run club!
