Do you ever feel down and discouraged, like you don’t have any energy?  Does winter seem to sap your energy and wear you down?

For many of us, our moods are directly linked to our level of physical activity. When we’re feeling low, it can be hard to find the motivation to get up and move. But that’s exactly what we need to do! Regular physical activity can have a positive effect on both your mental and physical health.

Here are five ways to use movement to improve your mood:

1. Get Outside: Taking a walk, running, biking or skiing outside has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. The fresh air and natural beauty can be incredibly calming and restorative.

2. Do Something Fun: When we’re not feeling our best, it’s important to do something enjoyable. That might mean going for a hike, taking a yoga class or taking a dance class.  Go out for a coffee or lunch after! Doing something fun will make you feel better by improving your mood and releasing endorphins.

3. Exercise with a Friend: Exercise is more fun when you have someone to share it with. You can motivate and encourage one another, and it can be fun to try new activities with a friend.  Take a lesson for a sport you have not tried before and have a friend join!

4. Set Goals: Setting goals for yourself can help you stay motivated and on track. If you want to improve your mood, set a goal to exercise a certain number of days a week or to increase the length or intensity of your workouts.  Choosing an event to train for will help keep you motivated to not give up!

5. Make it a Habit: The more you do something, the easier it becomes. Make physical activity part of your daily routine, and the benefits will soon become apparent. Moving your body can be a powerful way to improve your mood. But it’s important to remember to listen to your body and take breaks when needed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, don’t push yourself too hard. Instead, focus on easy hikes or walks.

No matter how you choose to move, remember that exercise is an important part of overall health and wellness. So get up, get out there, and get moving!
