The Missing Half of the Metric Story: Why Your Watch Isn’t the Boss of You

Move over, metrics. There’s a new kid in town—and it’s you.

For years, we’ve been told that the only way to measure fitness is through the cold, hard data on our wrists. We track heart rate, HRV, sleep stages, power, and cadence. We obsess over the graphs. And don't get me wrong—as a coach with a healthcare background and a love for human science, I know those numbers have their place.

But I also know that half the story is missing.

The Tech vs. The Truth

Technology is incredible, but it isn’t infallible. How many times has your Oura ring told you that you’re "ready to rip" after a night of poor sleep, only for you to feel like a slug? Or, have you ever had your watch tell you your "Productivity is Declining" during a run that felt effortless and joyful?

I’ve seen athletes whose metrics created a "perfect" Acute onChronic Workload Ratio (ACWR), yet they were on the verge of a breakdown or a stress fracture. Why? Because the watch doesn't know about your work stress, your mood, or that nagging "twinge" in your tibia that only shows up at mile four.

Introducing the Steady State Fit App

I was tired of not being able to easily track the "human" side of training with my athletes. So, a few of us built the solution: The Steady State Fit App.

It’s a science-based tool designed for athletes, coaches, and physical therapists. Instead of just pulling in GPS data, it asks the vital questions: How are you feeling? How did you eat? Is your mood tanking? Do you have pain?

The app generates a Recovery Score by combining your subjective feelings. When we layer that with objective data., we get a Durability Score. This is the holy grail of training—it tells how you are really doing, allowing you to pivot before an injury happens.

Training the Mind

Data tells us what the body is doing, but mindfulness tells us why the soul is doing it.

I’ve spent years studying the Toltec Tradition and Buddhism, and I’ve woven these philosophies into my coaching. To be a successful athlete, the mind needs as much training as the lungs. I use journaling prompts and mindfulness to find:

  • Peace and Joy in the mundane miles.

  • Patience when the body needs to heal.

  • A Deeper "Why" that keeps you moving for a lifetime, not just for a race.

Fitness is a Lifelong Right

I believe everyone is an athlete, regardless of age or equipment. If you have friends or family who want to maintain their independence—even if they use a cane or walker—check out my newly released app, Silver Power.

Silver Power App offers 9-to-25 minute workouts focused on education and functional biology. Whether it’s HIIT or seated mobility, it’s about ensuring the "Silver" years are powerful ones.
